Qualitative research exists in many formats, representing numerous data sources, philosophies, and inquiry practices. However, we often know little about the background work involved in qualitative data analysis. This webinar will dive deeper into the ways that data can be qualitatively analyzed that go beyond “Theme Emerged.”

Elise Radina

Dr. M. Elise Radina is a Professor in the Department of Family Science and Social Work and Associate Provost for Miami University. Dr. Radina is a qualitative methodologist whose research focuses broadly on families and health. She primarily studies mid and later life women in family contexts (e.g., breast cancer survivorship, positive aging, breast cancer-related lymphedema). She has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.

Her work has appeared in the Journal of Family Theory & ReviewFamily Relations, the Journal of Women & AgingCancer Nursing, and the Journal of Family Nursing. She serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Family Theory & Review and has served as a guest co-editor on two special issues for the journal. Her co-edited book published by Taylor & Francis, Real Stories of How Qualitative Data Analysis Happens: Moving Beyond “Themes Emerged” (with Áine Humble) was published in 2018 and was awarded the 2020 Anselm Strauss Award for Qualitative Family Research by the National Council on Family Relations.

Aine Humble

Áine Humble is a Professor in the Department of Family Studies and Gerontology at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She carries out primarily qualitative research, and her current research interests focus on LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) families and aging issues, older women and healthy aging, qualitative research methods, and computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software programs.

She most recently completed a study on the value of “household bubbles” on providing support to mothers of young children during the the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is available as an open-access publication in the Journal of Comparative Family Studies. She has published her work in other scholarly journals such as the International Journal of Qualitative Methods, Family Relations, Journal of Family Theory & Review, Journal of GLBT Family Studies, and the Journal of Woman & Aging. She currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Women & Aging, and she is an Editorial Assistant for Forum: Qualitative Social Research. From 2009 to 2023, Dr. Humble provided introductory and advanced training on MAXQDA qualitative data analysis software through her consulting company to academic and government audiences.

Chapter Authors Who Will Present in the Webinar

Siduri Haslerig currently serves as the associate dean of the college of education at Boise State University.  In this role, she is primarily responsible for research, faculty affairs, and graduate education within the college. Her scholarship focuses on higher education systems, individuals’ experiences within them, intercollegiate athletics, and equity. 

Sara Grummert is the Academic Director for the Institute for Mixed Methods Research. She leads strategy around how to support the larger academic and research community through conducting methods consultations and training workshops, and partnering with other scholars on research design and data analysis for educational grants. Dr. Grummert’s scholarship examines antiblackness and carcerality in college athletics and other state systems.

Danielle S. Rudes is a Professor of Criminal Justice & Criminology at Sam Houston State University in Texas. She is also Deputy Director of the Center for Advancing Correctional Excellence (ACE!). She is a former Fellow with the Bureau of Justice Assistance focusing on Enhancing Correctional Spaces and Cultures. Dr. Rudes is an expert qualitative researcher with over 20 years of experience working with corrections agencies. She is recognized for her work examining how social control organizations understand, negotiate, and at times, resist change. Dr. Rudes has a broad grant portfolio and she is on the editorial boards of several journals. Her book(with Shannon Magnuson & Angela Hattery), Surviving Solitary: Living and Working in Restricted Housing Units won the 2023 Outstanding Book Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

Shannon Magnuson, she/her, is the Director of Influence and Storytelling for Justice System, a nonprofit research and consulting firm. Shannon has over ten years of experience conducting quantitative and qualitative evaluations of programs and practices implemented to reduce the carceral response to crime and get individuals out of the criminal legal system as soon as possible. Shannon regularly relies on various research projects she leads to provide evidence-informed technical assistance to local, state, and federal partners to help them become more equitable, fair, and humane. Lastly, as the Director of Influence and Storytelling, she leads the development of creative and research-based mixed media to enhance practice and engage general audiences to reduce the over-reliance of jails and prisons.
