The International Leadership Association and our event partner, Women4Change wish to thank everyone who attended the collaboratory 7 December 2023. We hope you are able to put the 7 practices to work in your own organizations and communities!
The Collaboratory was two hours in length and included:
Introduction – Collaboratory Emcees, Katherine Tyler Scott, (KiThoughtBridge, ILA Board Past President & Women4Change Board) and Ariel Kaufman, (University of Wisconsin-Madison & ILA Public Leadership Member Community) welcomed participants to the Collaboratory, discussed the connection between civic engagement and public leadership, and introduced speakers Jess Rimington and Joanna Cea.
Keynote Talk and Q&A – Jess Rimington and Joanna Cea, authors of Beloved Economies: Transforming How We Work, presented seven key practices that cultivate civic participation and responsible leadership and strengthen organizations and communities. Jess and Joanna both served as Visiting Scholars with Stanford University’s Global Projects Center where they co-facilitated research with more than 200 collaborators to identify co-creative practices that awaken next economies. After discussing the first 3 practices, they responded to Q&A, then continued with the final 4 practices. led the audience in an individual reflection exercise followed by Q&A. They will then continue with the final 4 practices followed by another reflection exercise and additional Q&A.
Reflective Exercise & Breakout Groups – Prior to entering the breakout, Collaboratory participants were asked to reflect and jot down thoughts on how these seven practices might inform their leadership work moving forward. Which do you already feel comfortable with? Which do you need to further develop to be more effective in your work and in your community?
Wrap-up Dialogue – Jess and Jo led the closing discussion after participants returned from their breakout groups. They asked participants to share in the group chat and responded to additional Q&A. Emcee Katherine Tyler Scott gave some closing reflections weaving everything together.
The Collaboratory was hosted in partnership by The International Leadership Association and Women4Change and received funding from the Lilly Endowment and the Herbert Simon Family Foundation.

Collaboratory Speakers & Facilitators
Joanna Levitt Cea is dedicated to reimagining investment and funding practices to lift up the well-being of all. She has worked in community-driven efforts to stop destructive investments that threaten local livelihoods and ecosystems, and she has also helped launch solutions that enable communities to determine our own economic futures. Joanna led the human rights organization International Accountability Project for eight years, and served as founding director of the Buen Vivir Fund with Thousand Currents.
Jess Rimington is a next economy strategist focused on the design and ethics of emerging post-capitalisms. Her practice and research is grounded in historical analysis, accessible truth-telling, and present-day experimentation. She is focused on supporting the imagination of small business and organizational leaders to step out of the current extractive systems into more resilient paradigms by transforming how we work. Jess’s work is informed by over a decade of experience leading two global organizations–as both an Executive Director and Managing Director–building cross-cultural teams with innovative work cultures rooted in power-sharing.
