Odds are good you aren’t happy with our leaders. Less than 1/3 of Americans believe their leaders are effective. That’s according to the Leadership Attitudes Survey by Dr. Lynn Shollen. Shollen shares more results from the survey followed by Dr. Sam Wilson’s insights from a similar survey in Australia – the Australian Leadership Index.

The two studies had remarkably similar findings. Bottom line: Most of us feel our leaders are too far removed from the everyday experiences of ordinary people.

So what can leaders do about it? Listen in to find out!

The Leadership Attitudes Survey  examines the public’s attitudes about leaders and leadership, perceptions of influences on leadership at various levels and in different sectors, and factors affecting willingness to follow, among other topics.  The Australian Leadership Index measures perceptions and expectations of leadership for the greater good in twelve institutions across the government, public and private and non-profit sectors in Australia.

Dr. S. Lynn Shollen is Associate Professor of Leadership Studies and department chair in the Department of Leadership and American Studies at Christopher Newport University, a public liberal arts institution in Newport News, Virginia, in the United States.

Dr. Sam Wilson is Senior Lecturer in Leadership in the Department of Management and Marketing at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. He is also co-director of the Thriving in Society 4.0 program of the Social Innovation Research Institute and Deputy Director of the Social Psychology of Innovation Research Group, also at Swinburne.
