Lifetime Achievement Awardee

Joanne B. Ciulla is Professor of Leadership Ethics and Academic Director of the Institute for Ethical Leadership at Rutgers University Business School. Prior to joining Rutgers, she was one of the founding faculty of the Jepson School of Leadership Studies (University of Richmond). She has had academic appointments at LaSalle University, Harvard Business School, The Wharton School and she held the UNESCO Chair in Leadership Studies at the United Nations International Leadership Academy in Jordan. In addition to these, she also had visiting appointments at Nyenrode University, The University of Melbourne, University of Fort Hare, and Oxford University. A BA, MA, and Ph.D. in philosophy, Prof. Ciulla has dedicated over 40 years, to writing about and teaching ethics – publishing 7 books and over 150 articles on ethics and related topics. She is nationally and internationally known for her work in designing and developing the field of leadership ethics.

Ciulla has served as president of both the International Society for Business, Economics, and Ethics and The Society for Business Ethics. She sits on the editorial boards of The Leadership Quarterly, Leadership, Leadership and the Humanities, Business Ethics Quarterly, and she edits the New Horizons in Leadership Studies series (Edward Elgar), which is the largest collection of books in leadership studies that are grounded in the liberal arts.

Prof. Ciulla is the recipient of the Distinguished Educator Award from the University of Richmond, the Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia, and The Master Teacher in Ethics Award from Brigham Young University and the Society for Business Ethics, and she is currently a Fulbright Specialist. She has given numerous lectures and seminars to business and government organizations in the US and abroad and has worked with the Brookings Institution and the Aspen Institute for many years. Ciulla lives in New York City with her husband René Kanters.
