In this webinar, Benjamin Redekop will talk about his new book, Environmentally Sustainable Leadership: Past, Present, and Future, which provides a comprehensive overview of the rise and evolution of environmentally sustainable leadership from the early 19th century to the present day. Redekop assesses the approaches of various historical and contemporary leaders, and provides a foundation for understanding the challenges, dilemmas, and opportunities for environmentally sustainable leadership today. The webinar will be conducted as a conversation with the host and there will be time for questions.

Through the lens of contemporary theories and models of leadership, including the Eco-Leadership paradigm, Redekop explores the notion of environmentally sustainable leadership from numerous perspectives and in a variety of historical, geographical, and theoretical settings. The pivotal role of women leaders in the modern environmental movement will be discussed, as will the unsustainable leadership of General Electric CEO Jack Welch in contrast to the sustainable leadership of Interface CEO Ray Anderson.

The conversation will clarify what the book is about and who the target audiences are, including researchers, academics and students interested in business and management, politics and public policy, business leadership, corporate social responsibility, management and sustainability, and environmental management. It will also appeal to those looking to better understand environmental leadership and the history of the environmental movement. Redekop will explain how he uses the book in his own undergraduate Environmental Leadership course.

By attending this webinar, participants will:

  • Learn about the historical development of environmentally sustainable — and unsustainable — leaders and leadership from the nineteenth century to the present day, and gain an enhanced sense of the ecological dimensions of leadership.

  • Learn about the theoretical underpinnings of environmentally sustainable leadership through analysis of a wide variety of leaders and leadership theories including the Eco-Leadership Paradigm.

  • Gain an understanding of the important role played by women leaders in the environmental movement, and their contribution to the development of ecologically-informed leadership styles.

  • Learn about the potential of this book to serve as a class text for a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses.
