Organized by ILA’s Leadership Development member community, this webinar will delve into the pervasive trauma in professional environments, magnified by toxic leadership, enabling followers, and inadequate systemic responses. In no uncertain terms, trauma migrates from the home into the workplace and from the workplace into our homes posing an existential threat confronting all of us today with its impacts undercutting interpersonal and intergroup relationships.
Data in the United States show that nearly every individual (90%) has experienced a significant traumatic event, heightening the risk of PTSD (Kilpatrick et al., 2013). Over half of U.S. employees (53%) have endured workplace trauma, yet less than half have received any support from their employers (Smith, 2016).
Workplace violence in the U.S. mirrors society at large, as evidenced by 656 mass shootings in the U.S. in 2023 (Mass Shooting Tracker, 2023). The Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) (n.d.) found 346 (52.7%) were school affiliated mass shootings. Moreover, nearly sixty percent (59.1%) of mass shootings between 2014 and 2019 were related to domestic violence, and in nearly seventy percent (68%) of mass shooting cases, the shooter had a history of domestic violence or killed a family member or intimate partner.
Outside of the U.S., the scenario is equally grave, with the World Health Organization finding that 70% of individuals in 24 surveyed countries have experienced multiple traumatic events, averaging 3.1 events per lifetime.

Dr. Pettis Perry is the Principal Consultant of Perry Organizational Effectiveness Consulting, LLC, a WA based firm. He has more than six decades of field experience as a turnaround executive leader, consultant, and professor of leadership and organizational effectiveness. He promotes seven strategies including transformative learning, transformative leadership, diversity & fairness, trauma-informed communities, and mental & physical wellness, integrative communities, and trauma-informed communities; and is authoring a book about trauma and toxicity in the workplace.
Dr. Wendy M. Edmonds is Interim Chair of the Management, Marketing, and Public Administration Department in the College of Business at Bowie State University, the oldest Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Maryland. She is an internationally recognized expert in toxic followership with a passion for positive change and is the author of Intoxicating Followership: in the Jonestown Massacre. Dr. Edmonds describes herself as a Workplace Toxicologist whose mission is to dismantle toxic followership and foster healthier, more productive environments.
Otto Henfling (Moderator) is the Principal Consultant and Managing Director at Trusted Leadership, a business consultancy that helps organizations deal with change and governance challenges. Otto is also a PhD candidate at the University of New England, where he is researching organizational leadership and its impact on performance and outcomes. He holds an MBA with Distinction and a Deans Medal from Western Sydney University and is a Fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia.
