Around the world, women are leading the way with effective, ethical, empathetic leadership. It’s exhausting! Global sustainability challenges and the pandemic have heightened the constant demands, deadlines, and daily dilemmas. 

ILA’s Women and Leadership member community looks forward to welcoming you to its 6th conference, 15-17 June in Portsmouth, UK.  The conference includes three days of programming including keynotes, reflective conversations, workshops, panels, presentations, and more. Substitutions

If the person who registered cannot attend and you wish to make a substitution, please email wlc2022@ilaglobalnetwork.org by 1 June 2022. Depending on the complexity of the request, the ILA reserves the right to assess a $30 change fee.

Cancellations

1. Cancellations must be emailed to wlc2022@ilaglobalnetwork.org by 15 May 2022. Cancellations received after 15 May 2022 are not refundable.

2. Registration cancellations received before the deadline are refundable, less a fee of 45 USD.

3. Refunds will be processed using the same method used for payment.  Refunds are processed once per month.

Plenary: Reflecting on Leadership Experiences: Rejuvenating Your Leadership

The conference opening plenary panel will explore the speakers’ own lived experiences of leadership during times of great uncertainty. In particular, the discussion will consider ways to navigate difficult leadership situations that require evolving tactics. One thing most people will agree is that leadership is tiring. With this in mind the plenary speakers will consider how they have maintained their own well being and what tactics they engage with to support their rejuvenation to continue their leadership journey.

Karen began her media career in 1993 at CIA MediaNetwork (now known as Wavemaker), working across a range of media performance accounts. Karen continued her career by joining Zenith Media in 1995 working on the prestigious BT account. Karen was quickly head-hunted by The Media Business Group.

In October 1999 Karen was promoted to the Board of Directors of the newly merged MediaCom and The Media Business Group Board. In January 2003, Karen moved from the Business Director role that she had held for so long to become the Marketing Director of MediaCom.

In 2008, Karen became MediaCom’s Chief Operations Officer for EMEA. Priority markets included Russia, Turkey, France, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Czech Republic and South Africa. After 3 years strengthening the EMEA network, during which time MediaCom moved from the 5th to 3rd largest EMEA network media agency, Karen was promoted to CEO of the UK Office in January 2011, running over £1.3bn of media billings and leading over 1,200 people in 5 UK locations.

MediaCom UK is the largest media agency in the UK with a range of diverse clients, such as Sky, Tesco, Coca Cola, Cancer Research UK, DFS, NBC Universal and Mars. MediaCom U.K represents Modern Britain with offices in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Edinburgh and Dublin. During Karen’s tenure as CEO the UK business won over £790 million of new business. (2011 -2015 inclusive)

In January 2016 after serving as CEO for 5 years, Karen was promoted to Chairwoman of MediaCom UK & Ireland and is closely linked with clients such as Tesco, Coca-Cola and Sky. In the role as Chairwoman, one of Karen’s many focuses was to support the continued growth and evolution of the regional UK offices which totalled 350 staff and had regional combined billings of £385 million. In January 2018, Karen took on a newly created role as the first UK Country Manager for WPP, the world’s largest communications network, overseeing 10,000 people across several well-known operating brands such as Ogilvy, Grey, H&K, VMLY&R and Wunderman Thompson. In this role Karen is responsible for delivering growth in WPP’s 2nd largest market, with revenue of $2 billion. Her focus is on developing customer experience, commerce strategies, marketing technology and relevant real-world communications for WPP clients.

In 2019 Karen was appointed a Non-Executive Director of the UK Cabinet Office. Karen was appointed as CEO of GroupM U.K, the world’s leading media investment company, in April 2020 – an additional role to her WPP UK Country Manager responsibilities. In November 2020 Karen featured in one of the Top 100 Great Black Britons, and in December 2021 was chosen to feature in the book; The Female Lead.

Dr. Katie Bell has extensive leadership experience across both corporate consumer goods and higher education sectors. She spent her early career at Nestle UK in various brand marketing roles based around the UK before taking the opportunity to work in Porto, Portugal as marketing director for Symington’s port wine company, and then in Barcelona, Spain as managing director of the European University business school. Her return to the UK saw her promoted through a number of marketing, innovation and board-level strategic planning roles at GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, where she was most latterly Vice- President of the Global Digital Marketing function.

Katie left GSK to take up a role as Chief Marketing Officer at Middlesex University, London, where amongst other things, she evolved the university-brand, redesigned the admissions service, and most recently led on the launch of higher and degree apprenticeships at the University. She recently completed her professional doctorate in higher education leadership.

Katie is currently Chief Marketing officer at UCAS where she is responsible for marketing, sales, communication and PR for both UCAS charity and for its commercial fund-raising business. Her main focus is in reshaping student admissions towards widening participation and access to higher education goals, and also in driving growth and innovation in the commercial activities which underpin the charitable objectives.

Kristin created WIN to bring alive a vision of a more feminine, global and sustainable way at work, in communities and life. More than 22000 individuals and hundreds of world-class companies have attended WIN’s live experiences, expanding worldwide. She pioneered a new way of looking at business through WIN’s framework of change, bringing in wellness, sustainability, beauty, art, new language and wholeness years ahead of the current trends.

As a global thought leader in the field of creativity, feminine and authentic leadership, she embraces her global responsibility through innovative leadership experiences and personal speaking engagements to inspire women worldwide to become agents of possibility.

She was awarded the CEO for Life award in 2021, was named among Diversity Global Magazine’s Top 10 Influential Women in Global Diversity and also received the International Alliance of Women Award. In her early career she worked for big companies such as JP Morgan, Citibank and Innovation Norway, EU and an as international strategy and marketing Consultant. A business economist (BI, Oslo) with an MBA (Milan’s Bocconi), she has also completed a wealth of interdisciplinary studies including acting and yoga. She attends global meetings such as the W7 of the G7 and the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, and also chaired the Women in Leadership meeting at the SDG tent during Davos in 2020.

Claudia de Castro Caldeirinha is a sought-of Leadership, and Gender Equality Senior Advisor. She is an author, TEDx speaker, trainer & facilitator, and executive coach (ICF-PCC). She is the CEO of REDSCOPE Consulting, a social company based in the heart of the European Union, Brussels.

Claudia works internationally for around 20 years. Her broad portfolio of clients includes Presidents, Prime-Ministers, EU Commissioners & CEOs – but also managers and change-makers all over the world. She is a trusted senior advisor of the European Commission and the European Parliament on matters of Gender Balance & Equity, Inclusive Leadership, and DEI.

Other (previous and current) clients include the remaining European Union Institutions, the United Nations and several of its agencies (OIM, UNDP, UNHCR), the OSCE, and multiple private companies (like Levi’s, EY, CISCO, ING Bank, among many others).

Claudia is co-author of “Women Leading the Way in Brussels” (Caldeirinha & Horst, John Harper Publishing, 2017), a book collecting the stories of inspirational women leaders in Europe, which provides advice for women in different professions, and suggests ways to advance gender equality at the top.

She has founded and directed the EU Office of the Club of Madrid (an international organisation composed of former Heads of State and Government), the Regional HQs of the George Soros Foundation, and developed and delivered high-impact transformational events, talks, trainings, and Master classes, in more than 25 countries around the world.

Her purpose: to co-create innovative, sustainable, inclusive, human-centric solutions, bringing ALL people on board – including women – as formal and informal leaders!

She is a founding member of the EU’s Master-Mind program for Women Leaders, and founder of a global Collective Coaching Community for talented women leaders from different generations.

Claudia has repeatedly been featured in mainstream magazines, newspapers, TV and radio. She has recently been distinguished as one of the 100 women leaders creating value in Brussels/Europe.

She has a Master in international politics and gender studies (UK), and a PhD Abd in International Affairs and Strategy (European University Institute, Florence – the “EU Harvard”).

Claudia works in five languages (EN, FR, PT, ES, IT), is Portuguese (born in East Timor) and is the mother of a teenager boy.

Celina Caesar-Chavannes is a business consultant, coach and international speaker, who currently serves part time as the Sr. Advisor, EDI Initiatives and Adjunct Lecturer at Queen’s University. Her new memoir, “Can You Hear Me Now?” was published by Random House Canada, in February 2021 and was selected as a finalist for the 2021 Shaughnessy Cohen prize for political writing and a book award finalist for the Speaker of Ontario Legislature. She was the former Member of Parliament for Whitby, Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Parliamentary Secretary for International Development. During her term as a Member of Parliament, Celina was awarded several distinctions including a feature in the April 2018 edition of O (Oprah Winfrey) Magazine entitled, “What would you stand up for and named Chatelaine Magazine’s Woman of the Year (2019). She has a Bachelor of Science, an MBA in Healthcare Management, an Executive MBA from the Rotman School of Management, and is currently enrolled in a neuroscience PhD program at Queen’s University exploring the intersection of empathy, leadership and equity. Celina is also a [Deepak] Chopra Certified Health Instructor, and bases much of her work on Ayurvedic principles. Prior to politics, Celina founded Resolve Research Solutions, Inc. – a research management consulting firm with the aim to provide research, consulting and education services to organizations seeking equity and advancing progress for those with multiple intersecting identities.

Victoria Redgrave is an Executive Director at Fidelity Management & Research Company (FMR Co.), the investment advisor for Fidelity’s family of mutual funds. Fidelity Investments is a leading provider of investment management, retirement planning, portfolio guidance, brokerage, benefits outsourcing and other financial products and services to more than 20 million individuals, institutions, and financial intermediaries.

Victoria’s career in Asset Management started in 2007 when she joined Fidelity’s UK office. In her current leadership role as Executive Director, Victoria is part of Fidelity’s Global Business Operations and Strategy team and has operational oversight across all business units in Fidelity’s London office. Victoria is focused on ensuring that all non-investment aspects of the office are operating effectively and meeting the needs of the business functions.

Prior to this role, Victoria established Fidelity’s first UK Corporate Access function in 2012, which led the way for the formation of Corporate Access teams across the buy-side in the UK. Victoria and her team worked collaboratively with Fidelity’s Investment Professionals to add value to their investment process. Victoria also served as the primary point of contact for Fidelity’s external research providers and partnered with Legal and Compliance to ensure that Fidelity was adherent to regulatory requirements.

In addition to her Executive Director responsibilities, Victoria co-founded and serves as Executive Sponsor for ONE London, the first-ever employee resource group in Fidelity’s UK office to champion Diversity & Inclusion. Victoria is also the Regional Sponsor for IMPACT UK, one of Fidelity’s special interest groups which promotes sustainability efforts, as well as Business Resource Co-Chair for Fidelity’s Women’s Leadership Group.

Integrated Alchemy: Awakening To Your Day Through Purposeful Presence

Start your day through an integration of movement and meditative reflection. Gather with LauraLynn Jansen, a doctoral student in Antioch University’s Ph.D. in Leadership & Change program, for a morning practice to align your inner state of awareness and presence. These sessions will involve engagement along the body-mind spectrum, to set a balanced tone for your day.

This reflective space will be opened-up through gentle movements followed by various reflective practices aimed to refine presence with self and authentic connection with others. You will be offered practical tools in somatic awareness-raising and mental presencing that you can take forward into your daily life as a leader. A few examples of these techniques are breath exploration, sensory perception, stretching of body parts associated with prolonged sitting, and bringing the mind into conscious awareness of the moment.

Creating deep sustainable change begins with self-understanding and mindfulness according to ancient texts and modern leadership theory (Sinclair, 2016; Wheatley, 2017). This offering invites you to heighten your connection with your innate wisdom as part of your path to being a mindfully authentic leader. The word yuj is a Sanskrit term often translated to mean to yoke or to unite. It refers to the interweaving of multiple aspects of self into a place of centeredness. This interweaving is what we will explore together each morning.

Awareness of our patterns and presence are part of the first steps to being a true agent of change intrinsically and extrinsically. It is demonstrated that leaders who are able to generate an understanding of self may then use this knowledge as a means for connecting more profoundly with others (Kernis, 2003; Sinclair, 2016). A portion of the session will also be dedicated to cultivating conscious connection with each other.

LauraLynn has been a cutting-edge illuminator along the pathway of individual and community welfare for nearly three decades. She is a maven in the field of integrated coaching and facilitation with extensive experience as a perineal wisdom educationalist and an innovator in sustainable leadership programs. Her capacity as a Co-Active coach and leader encompasses an introspective and highly interactive delivery system. She curates spaces for self-discovery and understanding, all for the sake of being an agent of authentic and sustainable change in community.

Through her visionary determination she has developed programs for senior executives, members of the armed forces, trauma-impacted youth, highly injured nurses, individuals struggling with de-motivated lifestyles, and individuals in communities historically overlooked.

Additionally, Jansen is a bona fide, internationally educated teacher having lived and studied abroad in India, China, Mexico, and Europe. Her role as an educator includes colleges to community settings from DC to Hawai’i. Nearly two decades ago Jansen co-created a curriculum and began facilitating a leadership development program addressing personal sustainability and community building through an authentically embodied leadership model for disconnected and traumatized youth.

She obtained an international coaching certification 2003, and is a Certified Professional Coach through the International Coaching Federation. Her master’s degree is in Integrative Health Education and she has attained the landmark status of an e-RYT 500 (experienced and registered yoga teacher) through the international registry, Yoga Alliance. She is a doctoral student in Leadership & Change, Antioch University.

LauraLynn is an innovator who personally lives what she champions in others by aiming us all toward a future of self-consciousness and greater vibrancy rooted in the awareness and the honoring of spirit.

Global Interconnectedness through Nature-based Mindfulness

This morning rejuvenation practice will invigorate participants to a more holistic connection to self, sentient beings, and the earth. Globally, there is an increased awareness of the importance of natural environments on overall human health and wellbeing (Capaldi et al., 2015; Gray & Colucci-Gray, 2018; Nisbet et al., 2019).

There are many benefits of nature-based mindfulness for humans, most notably enhanced mood, feeling more connected to nature, and reduced stress (Capaldi et al., 2015; Nisbet et al., 2019; Timko Olson et al., 2020). Individuals can experience a connection to nature when they see themselves as part of nature rather than separate (Chaudhury & Banerjee, 2020; Nisbet, 2019). The relationship with nature increases ecological attitudes and behaviors, which can be advantageous to humanity and environmental health. Connecting to nature can also raise an individual’s concern and care for the natural world (Barbaro & Pickett, 2016; Nisbet et al., 2019). Research shows the healing benefits of mindfulness and time in nature, there is increasing interest in combining both activities (Djernis et al., 2019). Nature-based mindfulness practices promote leadership well-being and ecological identity. Thus, sharing a morning practice of nature-based mindfulness can enable attendees to increase awareness of themselves, their well-being, and their connection to the environment.

Debbee A. Maraglio-Lynn is a Navy veteran who holds a BS in Environmental Science, MA in Education, MA in Applied Leadership Theory, and is a Ph.D. candidate in Organizational Leadership. Debbee’s experience includes over 15-years in mind-body health. Her training as a certified Mindfulness teacher, certified 500-hour Registered Yoga Alliance instructor, current training in yoga therapy, teaching nature connection, mountaineering, outdoor skills and activities. She is currently training with the Mindfulness Coaching School as an International Coaching Federation (ICF) mindfulness coach.

Debbee is the founder of a Mindfulness-based consultancy company and is a certified mind-body instructor with training in nature-based practices and mindfulness separately and collectively. In addition, she has served as a consultant in organizations, including Washington state regional school districts in the United States. Leading with over 8-years of mindfulness experience, the facilitator will provide practices that can increase attendees’ awareness, knowledge, connection to self, nature, people, and subsequent practicing of nature-based mindfulness.

Carole Elliott is Professor of Organisation Studies at Sheffield University Management School, University of Sheffield. She is an associate editor of Gender, Work and Organization, and has previously served as editor-in-chief of Human Resource Development International. She sits on a number of editorial boards, and has published in a variety of journals, including Academy of Management Learning and Education, Organization Studies, Gender, Work and Organization, Management Learning, International Small Business Journal, and Leadership. Her research interests include gender and leadership, Critical HRD, and the development of multimodal analysis techniques for management and organization studies. In 2021 Carole was elected to the British Academy of Management (BAM) College of Fellows, and was the recipient of the Laura Bierema Excellence in Critical HRD by the Academy of HRD (AHRD).

Valerie Stead is Professor of Leadership, Learning and Organization, and Director of the LUMS Academy for Gender, Work and Leadership at Lancaster University Management School, U.K.  Her research examines the relationship between leadership, learning and gender. Recent projects include the development of critical approaches including multi-modal analytical techniques to explore leader and leadership constructions in popular culture. Valerie has published widely, including in Organization Studies, Gender, Work and Organization, Management Learning, Leadership, International Small Business Journal, and has co-edited the Edward Elgar ‘Handbook of Research Methods on Gender and Management’ with Carole Elliott and Sharon Mavin. Valerie is a Fellow of the British Academy of Management, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Increased attention to media representations of gender and leadership research is revealing the significant role the media plays in shaping how we think about leadership. This includes influencing perceptions as to what constitutes ‘good’ leadership, and who is a legitimate leader (Stead, Elliott, and Gardiner, 2021). To understand media’s role in sustaining masculinist understandings of leadership we require research methods that can interrogate textual and visual forms of communication.

The workshop aims to introduce participants to the use of an advanced qualitative multimodal analytical framework in conducting media research. The workshop will:

  • Introduce participants to a novel analytical framework (Elliott & Stead, 2018) designed to interrogate how text and imagery combine to construct media representations of gender and leadership.
  • Apply the framework using examples of media text and imagery (illustration will be focused on representation of women leaders from the media.),
  • Consider the value of adopting multimodal analytical techniques to their area of research.

Travel to Portsmouth

Portsmouth is easily accessible through national and international sea, air, rail, and road connections. Travelling around the city is also very easy and most sites are in walking distance. We also have an efficient public bus service and ample taxi services.

Portsmouth and Southsea Station (the main station for Portsmouth) and Portsmouth Harbour Station are both within 10 minutes walking distance of the Faculty of Business and Law where the Conference will be located.  However, we would recommend travelling to Portsmouth and Southsea Station.

Heathrow Airport is 1 hour 30 minutes away by road and offers flights from many airlines and a multitude of international and national destinations. Getting to Portsmouth by rail from Heathrow involves getting the London Underground to London Waterloo and then getting a direct South Western train to Portsmouth & Southsea train station.  Train times are available, and tickets can be purchased, from the National Rail webpage here.

There is a direct National Express coach from Heathrow Airport to the Hard Interchange in Portsmouth which is half a mile from the Faculty of Business and Law buildings.  Coach timetables are available, together with tickets to purchase, from the National Express website here.

Gatwick Airport is 1 hour 20 minutes away by road. It is the UK’s second largest airport serving approximately 200 destinations in 90 countries. There is a direct Southern Trains service from the airport to Portsmouth & Southsea train station as well as a direct National Express Coach service.  Train times are available, and tickets can be purchased, from the National Rail webpage here.

Southampton Airport is 30 minutes away by road and serves around 40 European destinations, including Leeds/Bradford, Newcastle, Dublin, Edinburgh and Glasgow. There is a direct South Western train service from Southampton Airport Parkway (next to the airport) to Portsmouth & Southsea train station.  Train times are available, and tickets can be purchased, from the National Rail webpage here.

Alternatively, airport pick-ups and returns via local taxi companies are available and, at prices ranging from around £40 (Southampton airport) to £150-75 return (London airports), can often be the cheaper form of travel if two or more persons are travelling.  We would recommend booking and Portsmouth has several taxi firms which can be used:

South Western Railway run a service from London Waterloo to Portsmouth & Southsea train station that leaves every 15 minutes during peak-times and takes just over 1 hour 30 minutes to reach Portsmouth & Southsea train station.

South Western Railway run a service from Southampton Airport Parkway to Portsmouth which leaves approximately every 20 minutes and takes approximately 1 hour to get to Portsmouth & Southsea train station.

There are also direct services from Bristol (2hrs), South Wales (3hrs 15mins) and more locally Bournemouth and Brighton.

Portsmouth is connected by a motorway network (A3/M27/A36/M275/M27) that makes it easily accessible by road. Some travel times and motorway directions are listed below: 

  • Central London (2hrs via A3(M)) 
  • M25 London orbital (1hr via A3(M)) 
  • Bristol (2hrs via M27/A36) onwards to South Wales 
  • Birmingham (3hrs via A34/M40) 
  • Heathrow Airport (1hr 30 mins by road via A3(M)/M25) for all international connections 
  • Gatwick Airport (1hr 30 mins by road, 1hr 36 mins by rail) for international connections 
  • Southampton International Airport (30 mins by road via M275/M27) for regular flights to e.g. Scottish airports, Leeds/Bradford, Newcastle, Manchester, the Channel Islands, Belfast, Dublin 

Each hotel does have parking available although it is limited.  For the Queen’s Hotel this is free of charge, whilst there is a charge for parking at the Holiday Inn Pembroke and IBIS.  The nearby Gunwharf Quay also offers extensive parking facilities costed at £20 per 24 hour period and is a short walk to the University.

There are regular daily direct coach services from London (for countrywide connections), Bristol (for West Country/South Wales), Birmingham (the Midlands and North), Heathrow, Gatwick and other locations. These services all call at The Hard Interchange by Portsmouth Harbour railway station. From here the Richmond Building (primary home of the Faculty of Business and Law) is half a mile walk away.

As noted above, most locations are a short walk away and there are good public transport and taxi services. We would encourage Conference delegates to walk or use public transport or taxis where possible. Portsmouth has an excellent Park and Ride service, bringing visitors quickly and easily to the centre of the city.

Local Attractions

Located in the historic waterfront city centre of Portsmouth on the south coast of England, and with a rich maritime history, Portsmouth is an attractive, friendly and vibrant city. It is compact enough so that everything is in easy reach, but large and cosmopolitan enough to offer a wide array of activities from cultural pursuits to shopping, entertainment and sport.

Spinnaker Tower

Spinnaker Tower was built as part of the centrepiece of the Renaissance of Portsmouth Harbour Project and has become Portsmouth’s most prominent landmark. Visible beyond 23 miles away; it dramatically overlooks the Portsmouth harbour, Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, City centre and all of Portsmouth and its neighbouring towns and suburbs.

Dr Liza Howe-Walsh is a Reader in International Human Resource Management (IHRM) at the University of Portsmouth. She has published widely including journals such as, the International Journal of Human Resource ManagementJournal of Global Mobility, Journal of Business Research and the Journal of International Management and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Global Mobility. She is the incoming President (2022) of the executive leadership team for women and leadership (ILA) and actively supports and research women’s leadership. Additionally, Liza has gained extensive consultancy experience, following a commercial career in IHRM for PwC and continues to support businesses on behalf of the University to support diversity, equality and inclusion.

Sue Kirk, Senior Lecturer in International Human Resource Management, Leadership, Work and Organisation, Newcastle University

Susan Kirk is the Deputy Head of the Leadership, Work and Organisation Subject Group at Newcastle University Business School. She is a Senior Lecturer in International Human Resource Management. Susan is an interpretivist researcher and publishes in the fields of identity, global talent management and professional doctorate education. Her work has been published in several book chapters and journals such as Work, Employment and Society, Global Networks, The International Journal of Human Resource Management, Human Resource Management Review and the European Management Review. ). Susan is an elected member of the Senior Leadership Team and the Research Group of the Women’s Council of the International Leadership Association (ILA). Susan is also an elected Special Interest Group (SIG) member and Secretary for the Human Resource Management SIG, the largest SIG in the British Academy of Management (BAM. She is Co-Lead for Research, Scholarship and Impact within her Subject Group and also Co-Theme Lead for Transport, Society and Place in the Newcastle University Mobility and Transport Research Group. 

Victoria Pagan

Victoria Pagan, Senior Lecturer in Strategic Management, Business School, Newcastle University  

Dr. Victoria Pagan is Senior Lecturer in Strategic Management and Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Business School at Newcastle University, UK. Prior to becoming an academic, Vic spent nearly a decade working in a commercial research and consultancy context with a range of public sector clients. Her research interests are qualitative and interpretivist, focused on: Knowledge- its generation, uses, and violations (epistemic violence, epistemic injustice); Morality and ethics- the expression / suppression of moral emotions; and social justice- equality, equity, diversities, inclusion / exclusion. She has recently published on vicarious schadenfreude in ephemera: theory and politics in organisation, on haunting in Culture and Organization, and on gender, risk and Covid-19 in Gender, Work and Organization. Work in Progress involves an exploration of the uses, and impacts of the uses, of non-disclosure agreements in a range of workplace contexts, specifically the implications for freedom in terms of restriction and liberation across work boundaries (employee/employer perspectives), metaphor and story as a way to resist their impact, tensions between secrecy and transparency, understanding the space between the two, and associated implications for voice including muting and silencing.

Sally Elizabeth Deck

Sally Elizabeth H. Deck, PhD Candidate, School of Leadership Studies, Gonzaga University

Sally Elizabeth H. Deck is a PhD candidate at Gonzaga University’s School of Leadership Studies. Seventeen years of teaching experience has included adult education, certificate programming, and University of Washington Tacoma undergraduate and graduate business courses in leadership, management, communication, and study abroad. In addition to teaching, she has developed women’s mentorship programs, bringing senior-executive level women to campus to mentor male and female graduate students. Her extensive development work led to the creation of a donor-funded young women’s leadership development retreat offered to local and international students.

Rita A. Gardiner

Rita Gardiner, Assistant Professor, Critical Policy, Equity and Leadership Studies, Faculty of Education, Western University

Dr. Rita A. Gardiner is Assistant Professor, Critical Policy, Equity, and Leadership Studies, in the Faculty of Education, Western University, Canada. Publications include Gender, Authenticity and Leadership: Thinking with Arendt (Palgrave MacMillan, 2015). She was also lead editor of a special issue on Leadership and #Me Too for Gender in Management: An International Journal. Additionally, Rita has published papers in Gender, Work and Organization, Journal of Educational History, Business Ethics Quarterly, Leadership, and Organization Studies. Currently, she is working on a SSHRC-funded project that examines the implementation of gender-based violence policies in Ontario universities, and a co-written book (with Dr. Katy Fulfer) that explores questions of home and belonging from an Arendtian, as well as intersectional feminist perspective. Rita is the 2022/23 President Elect for the Women and Leadership Affinity Group, International Leadership Association.

Wendy Fox-Kirk

Wendy Fox-Kirk, Assistant Professor, Business Administration & Marketing, Weber State University

Wendy Fox Kirk is an Assistant Professor and Department Chair for Business Administration & Marketing in the Goddard School of Business & Economics. She is also works as a coach and supervisor for students on the Year in Industry at the University of Birmingham, and for Master’s students at the University of Stirling. Her research examines gender and power in organizations.  In her most recent work, she has, together with colleagues developed the concept of Genderwashing in organizations, and how it creates a myth of equality.  She received the 2019 Outstanding Emerging Scholar Award by ILA’s Women’s Leadership Affinity Group. Publications include articles in Gender in Management: An International Journal, Journal of Strategic Management Studies and Advances in Developing Human Resources and, a chapter in the forthcoming Handbook of International and Cross-Cultural Leadership Research Processes, Routledge.

Dionne Rosser-Mims

Dionne Rosser-Mims, Vice Chancellor, Troy University – Phenix City 

Dionne Rosser-Mims, Ph.D., is as a Full Professor of adult education and former Dean of the College of Education at Troy University (TROY). Appointed Vice Chancellor of the Troy University Phenix City Campus effective October 1, 2020, Dr. Rosser-Mims has served in a range of administrative positions during her TROY tenure.  She completed Harvard’s Women in Educational Leadership Institute and is the recipient of the 2013 Wallace D. Malone, Jr. Distinguished Faculty Award, a 2016 Chancellor’s Fellow, and past president of Troy University’s Faculty Senate serving two years consecutively. Dr. Rosser-Mims has nearly 20 years of adult education experience to include work in collegiate teaching as well as training and development. Over the past ten years she has engaged in a range of international-related work to include having led study abroad experiences, negotiated agreements with Kyambogo University and Makerere University, and served as a 2019 workshop presenter in the inaugural year of the Higher Education Resource Services, East Africa Leadership Academy held at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda.  She has authored four books with the most recent 2020 co-edited publication titled Pathways into the Political Arena: The Perspectives of Global Women Leaders. She has published over 15 articles and book chapters combined and delivered conference presentations and speaking engagements at the regional, national, and international levels. Dr. Rosser-Mims is the co-founder and former co-editor in chief of Dialogues in Social Justice: An Adult Education Journal, a peer-reviewed open-access journal.

Karen Perham-Lippman

Karen Perham-Lippman, Manager, Supplier Diversity and ESG, Xcel Energy

Karen Perham-Lippman, MS, CDP, CAGS is a dynamic executive and mission-driven business strategist with nearly fifteen years of demonstrated strategic and processing thinking results in diversity, equity and inclusion, corporate social responsibility, community outreach and employee engagement.

As a practitioner with consultancy experience, she has worked with nonprofit, business, state government, and municipal clients. Ms. Perham-Lippman leads supplier diversity and ESG with Xcel Energy and is an Adjunct Professor with the Community College of Denver’s Center for Business, Industry, Technology & Public Service. Ms. Perham-Lippman received her Certified Diversity Professional credentials from Cornell University and is a Ph.D. candidate at Eastern University.

Ms. Perham-Lippman’s dissertation work is focused on exploring destructive leadership, followers, and conducive environments as a group process with a particular focus on the technology sector where she has spent more than a decade of her career. Her research focus also includes Women and Leadership, for which she is a co-author of a of a SAGE Publishing business case study entitled Employee Workload and Retention in an Environment of Unpaid Labor: Acknowledging and Supporting “Women’s Work” (2022).

Ms. Perham-Lippman has been recognized with numerous awards for her leadership contributions and service to nonprofits and public schools, and for dedication to serving youth and families in poverty. Ms. Perham-Lippman resides in Colorado with her three sons and serves her local community on the scholarship and STEM Eureka Advisory Councils with Girls Inc. of Metro Denver and on the executive board of NAMIC or the National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communication’s Denver chapter. Nationally, she serves on DisabilityIN’s Mental Wellness Executive Committee and co-chairs their Substance Use Disorder subcommittee. In 2021 she was appointed to State of Colorado’s Business Experiential Learning (BEL) Commission by Governor Polis.

Randal Joy Thompson

Randal Thompson, President & CEO, Dream Connect Global

Randal Joy Thompson, PhD is a scholar-practitioner with 40 years professional experience in international development, serving in countries around the world. A Fellow with the Institute for Social Innovation, Fielding Graduate University, her research focuses on the commons, gender, education, evaluation, and organization development. Her book publications include Reimagining Leadership on the Commons: Shifting the Paradigm for a more Ethical, Equitable, and Just World (in press 2021), Proleptic Leadership on the Commons: Ushering in a New Global Order (2020), and Leadership and Power in International Development: Navigating the Intersections of Gender, Culture, Context, and Sustainability (2018) which won the Human Resource Development R. Wayne Pace HRD Book of the Year Award. She has researched and published book chapters and peer reviewed journal articles on women’s leadership. Dr. Chrys Egan is the Associate Dean of the Fulton School of Liberal Arts and a Professor of Communication at Salisbury University.  She is Past-Chair of the International Leadership Association’s “Women and Leadership,” and Second Vice President of the Maryland Communication Association.
