About the Conference

The 2022, ILA Healthcare Leadership Conference theme is “Strengthening Ties Between Healthcare and Leadership: Experiences, Effects, and Resilience.” In light of challenges during the COVID pandemic, the conference will address experiences, effects, and resilience relevant to healthcare leadership. The conference will bring together healthcare professionals  (including leaders, students, patients, practitioners, and educators) and leadership experts who will cover foundational and cutting-edge topics that are relevant for the healthcare field to optimize leader development, leadership education, research, and practice.

Being an effective healthcare professional requires leadership knowledge and application, expertise, and collaboration. The conference will therefore include breakout sessions addressing:

  3. If you wanted to advise someone moving into a leadership role in health care tomorrow, and who is interested in taking on health care challenges of the future, what are the three most important attributes of leadership they need to learn?

Dr. Marcia Anderson is Cree-Anishinaabe and grew up in the North End of Winnipeg. Her family roots go to Peguis First Nation and Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba. She practices both Internal Medicine and Public Health as a Medical Officer of Health with Indigenous Services Canada- Manitoba Region. She is the Vice-Dean, Indigenous Health, Social Justice and Anti-Racism and the Executive Director of Indigenous Academic Affairs in the Ongomiizwin Indigenous Institute of Health and Healing, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba. She serves as the Chair of the Indigenous Health Network of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada and the Chair of the National Consortium for Indigenous Medical Education. She was recognized for her contributions to Indigenous Peoples health with a National Aboriginal Achievement Award in March 2011. In 2018 she was named one of the 100 most powerful women in Canada by the Women’s Executive Network. She recently received the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Dr. Thomas Dignan Indigenous Health Award.

Jamiu Busari is an associate professor of medical education at Maastricht University and currently a consultant paediatrician and Dean of health Professions Education at the Horacio Oduber Hospital, Aruba. Prior to that, he was the former Department Chair and Program Director of Pediatrics, at Zuyderland Medical Center, Netherlands.

Jamiu is a Maastricht University alumnus, a Harvard Macy Scholar and an HBS executive education graduate in Managing Health Care Delivery. He is a former executive member of the Netherlands Association for Medical Education (NVMO) and a founding member of  ‘sanokondu’ (an international community of practice dedicated to fostering health professional leadership education worldwide). Jamiu is a public speaker, writer and clinician educator. As a health care leader, he is a fervent advocate for diversity, social accountability, and social responsibility. His activities in medical education and as a clinician have been recognized through various awards including the Educational Leadership Award 2015 (World Education Congress), Clinician of the Year award 2015 (Maastricht University) the international Residency Educator Award 2016 (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada) and he Critics’ Choice Award 2017 (Association for the study of medical education).

Peter Lees is the Chief Executive of the UK Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM). In 2011, he was charged by the UK medical royal colleges and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges with leading the establishment of FMLM which became an independent charity in 2019. FMLM has over 2,500 members and jointly owns the journal BMJ Leader. FMLM defined the first UK Leadership and management standards for medical professionals and awards fellowships against those standards.

Previously, Peter combined a career in neurosurgery with senior roles in operational management and leadership development at trust, regional and national levels and in global health. Formerly he was Medical Director, Director of Workforce and Education and Director of Leadership at NHS South Central Strategic Health Authority. He was also Senior Lecturer in Neurosurgery at the University of Southampton from 1989 to 2011.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and a Senior Fellow of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management. In 2017, he was appointed Honorary Visiting Professor at Bayes Business School, City, University of London and was awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Educators in 2018. He was awarded an MBE for services to medical leadership in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2021.

Mathieu Louiset is Head of Improvement at PAQS in Belgium. Occupational therapist by training, after several years in Switzerland in hand pathology and surgery, Mathieu obtained a Master’s degree in public health specializing in hospital management at UCLouvain. A “Process Com” practitioner, he also holds university certificates in e-learning (Faculty of Psychology UCLouvain), in innovation management (Louvain School of management UCLouvain), and change management (Louvain School of management UCLouvain). His career led him to UCLouvain, where he worked for the Faculty of Public Health on Quality, Improvement and Innovation projects in healthcare. He is now a guest lecturer at UCLouvain for the Strategic Management of healthcare institutions course. Since 2021, he is a Fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (USA). Mathieu Louiset is also part of the editorial committee for the scientific paper “Risques et Qualité”.

Dr. Ronald E. Riggio, Ph.D. is the Henry R. Kravis Professor of Leadership and Organizational Psychology at Claremont McKenna College. Anne Matlow MSc MD FRCPC is a Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at University of Toronto‘s Temerty Faculty of Medicine where she is Faculty Lead, PG Leadership. Her passion for systems improvement in care quality and patient safety has been realized throughout her career, including leadership positions locally, nationally (Board of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute; surveyor with Accreditation Canada; Patient Safety Systems Educator with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)) and internationally (founding member of the Pediatric International Patient Safety and Quality Collaborative). Her current focus is on leadership education as a key lever for systems transformation; she co-directs a Leadership Certificate Program at the University of Toronto, and led the RCPSC’s team in partnership with the Canadian Society for Physician Leaders and LEADS Global in developing a leadership simulation game, SimuLEADerShip. She has co-chaired the Planning Committee of The International Summit on Leadership Education for Physicians (TISLEP) and is a past co-Chair of Sanokondu, an international community of practice fostering leadership education for healthcare professionals. Her purpose is to equip physician leaders of today and tomorrow with the knowledge and skills needed to work collaboratively to create and nurture a culture of quality, safety and wellness for providers and patients alike.

Dr. Vijay Agarwal is the secretary general of the Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organization. He was responsible for setting up Max Saket and Pushpanjali Crosslay Hospitals. He is Hony Advisor to Global Association of Physicians of India (GAPIO). Dr. Agarwal has played a central role in creating strategies for national programs of global importance such as the Pulse Polio program. He was a member of the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, Delhi Government, and has been instrumental in introducing and implementing the concept of Centralized Hospital Waste Management Scheme in Delhi. He is the Founder President of Society For Child Development which works with children with special abilities.

Peter B. Angood is the chief executive officer and president of the American Association for Physician Leadership; the only professional organization solely focused on leadership education and management training for the physician workforce, present in over 45 countries.

 

Previously, Dr. Angood was first chief patient safety officer and a vice president for The Joint Commission where he oversaw the National Patient Safety Goals and other enterprise-wide, international patient safety initiatives. He also completed a two-year engagement with the National Quality Forum and National Priorities Partnership as Senior Advisor for Patient Safety before assuming the role of Chief Medical Officer with the Patient Safety Organization of GE Healthcare. During these engagements, Dr. Angood continued intermittent work with the World Health Organization (WHO) Patient Safety initiative after helping lead the early development of the WHO Collaborating Center for Patient Safety Solutions.

 

Earlier in his career, after initially practicing with hospitals of the McGill University system, Dr. Angood was subsequently recruited to surgery faculty and hospital administrative positions at the University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, and Washington University in St. Louis. He completed his formal academic career as a Full Professor of Surgery, Anesthesia, and Emergency Medicine. Dr. Angood is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada), the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Critical Care Medicine, which also recognized him as a Master of Critical Care Medicine. He has a history of active involvement with numerous professional organizations and served as president of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Angood’s research interests have addressed leading-edge problems; he has authored nearly 200 publications and is a well-recognized international speaker on the host of issues related to physician leadership. Dr. Angood is also a Fellow of the Explorers Club in New York City.

Dr. Neale Fong has more than 35 years’ experience in medical, health care and aged care leadership roles. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Bethesda Hospital, Chair of the WA Country Health Service Board, President of the Australasian College of Health Service Management and a Non-Executive Director at the Digital Health CRC. He was formerly Project Director for the establishment of the Curtin Medical School, the Director General of the WA Department of Health and Chief Executive Officer of St John of God Hospital Subiaco. He currently consults widely through Australis Health Advisory to a number of key health clients in Australia. He holds Bachelor Degrees in Medicine and Surgery, a Masters in Theological Studies and a Masters in Business Administration.

Prof Dr. Marleen Temmerman is a well-recognized global leader in women, adolescent and child health and rights. She brings academic, technical, political, governance, management, and leadership skills to the table as well as diplomacy, advocacy, fundraising, training and clinical expertise. She has a strong track record of working with governments, multilateral organisations, academia, professional bodies, development agencies, private sector, civil society, non-governmental and faith-based organisations, in a global and changing world. She is known for strategic partnership building and communication skills and has the ability to build relationships and influence at the highest levels. She is a charismatic leader, a trust-builder with diverse groups of stakeholders, leading to innovation, creativity and strong partnerships.

At present she holds the position of Associate Director of the Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health, Aga Khan University (AKU) East Africa, based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Previously, she served as Chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Aga Khan University in Nairobi as well as Director of the Department of Reproductive Health and Research (RHR) at the World Health Organization (WHO), HQ Geneva. She was elected Senator in the Belgian Parliament (2007-12) where she served as a member of the Commission on Social Affairs, and Chair of the Commission on Foreign Affairs and Defence. In that capacity, she was a member of the European Parliamentary Forum and Chair of the HIV/AIDS Advisory Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

She is the Founding Director of the International Centre of Reproductive Health (ICRH) at Ghent University, Belgium, with offices in Kenya and Mozambique and member of a large global collaborative academic network (28 universities globally). ICRH is a WHO Collaborating Centre on Reproductive Health since 2004, and a UNFPA preferential partner.

She has a strong academic background with over 500 peer reviewed publications and books in the area of women, adolescents and children health and rights, family planning, HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases, and health systems (Scopus H-index 65). She supervised over 50 PhD students and won several awards and honours. She is Professor-Emeritus OB/GYN at Ghent University, Belgium, has an Honorary Professorship at the University of the Western Cape, South-Africa, the Free University in Brussels, Belgium and National Institute Family Planning Research, China.

Former important affiliations/memberships include: 1) the UN  iERG (independent expert review group) created in 2012 to report regularly to the United Nations Secretary-General on the results and resources related to the Global Strategy for Women, Adolescent and Child Health– 2) the EWEC (Every Woman Every Child) platform created to catalyze a political movement to advance the health and well-being of women, children and adolescents everywhere; 3) the FP2020 Reference group, FP2020 is a global partnership to empower women and girls by investing in rights-based family planning; 4) the Guttmacher-Lancet Commission on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in the post-2015 world; 5) the Lancet Commission on Adolescent Health, 6) Scientific Advisory Committee of the EDCTP (European and Developing Countries Trial Partnership), 7) Chair Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition; 8) Senior advisor for the WHO Cluster ‘Families, Women and Children’; 9) Senior Fellow in the Institute for Global Health Diplomacy in Geneva, as well as member of several professional bodies. 

Ezequiel Garcia Elorrio MD MSc MBA PhD is founder and board member of the Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy in Argentina, where he also leads the Department of Health Care Quality and Patient Safety.

Dr. Garcia Elorrio still practices medicine as general internist and is currently Professor of Public Health at CEMIC and holds a lecturer position at the University of Buenos Aires.

Has worked extensively in Quality of Care and Patient Safety research, education, and implementation projects in Latin America. Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia funded by NIH, USAID, PATH, URC, IADB, WB, WHO and the B&M Gates Foundation among others.

He is an active collaborator of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement as faculty and facilitator in the LAC region as well active member of International Society for Quality in Healthcare  -ISQua  –  to promote improvement globally. He has recently been appointed President Elect of ISQua from 2023. Since 2020 he became Office Director of Planetree for the south region of Latin America

In 2018 he was part of the Lancet commission on Quality in Developing Countries -HQSS- that contributed with a renovated vision of the field of Improvement and measurement. That report led to the creation of the QuEST network to improve health systems quality in LMICs, and he is Co-PI of the Latin-American Center of this endeavor.

Erin S. Barry, M.S. is Assistant Professor in the Department of Military and Emergency Medicine at the Uniformed Services University (USU). She works with the Leader and Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Program and is the Curriculum Developer for the Office of the Professor of Military Science (OPMS). Her role is to develop leadership education and development programs that integrate research, curricula, and assessment within the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and Graduate Education Office. Ms. Barry’s educational background includes a B.E. (2006) in Biomedical Engineering from Vanderbilt University and an M.S. (2008) in Biomedical Engineering from University of Texas at Arlington. In addition to her research and program development, Ms. Barry mentors and coaches graduate and medical students. She is currently working on her Ph.D. in Health Professions Education focusing on leadership and followership within healthcare teams. She is a co-founder of the Healthcare Leadership Community of the International Leadership Association.

Ming-Ka Chan, MD, MHPE, RCPSC is a Chinese settler grateful to be living and working on Treaty 1 Territory/Homeland of the Metis Nation (Winnipeg) in Turtle Island (Canada). A Pediatric Clinician Educator & Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba, her scholarship focuses on social justice & leadership education in the health professions. Her educational background includes a BSc in Psychology (1991) from University of Toronto, MD (1995) from University of Western Ontario, Pediatric Residency at Queen’s University (1995-1997) & University of Manitoba (1997-1999) and MHPE from University of Illinois at Chicago (2011).  Within Manitoba, she is the Vice Chair, Physician Health & Wellness Committee, Doctors Manitoba; Pediatric Lead, Equity Diversity Inclusivity & Social Justice; and Co-Director of the Office of Leadership Education, Rady Faculty Health Sciences. Nationally, she is the co-lead for the Canadian Leadership Institute for Medical Education CLIME 2.0 program and the founder and Planning Committee Chair for the Canadian Pediatric Chief Resident Conference. Internationally, she is cofounder and Chair of Sanokondu, a multinational community of practice who create learning spaces for health leadership education. Graham Dickson is Professor Emeritus of Leadership Studies at Royal Roads University in Canada. Graham is currently building an international collaborative with respect to health leadership through a not-for-profit enterprise called LEADS Global. Dr. Dickson is the Senior Research Advisor to the Canadian Society of Physician Leaders (CSPL) and the Canadian Health Leadership Network (CHLNet). Graham was principal investigator in a cross-Canada research project that led to the creation of the LEADS in a Caring Environment capabilities framework. LEADS is now endorsed by health authorities in most Canadian provinces, and by most national health organizations, as well as abroad. Graham has authored, in collaboration with Bill Tholl, two editions (2014, 2020) of Bringing Leadership to Life in Health: LEADS in a Caring Environment, published by Springer-Verlag. He has been co-editor—with Dr. Karen Owen, former CEO of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA) in Australia–of three special edition Emerald Journals, dedicated to medical leadership (the latest was published in the spring of 2018). Graham helped to develop the Master of Arts in Leadership (Health specialisation) for Royal Roads University and was the founding Director of the Centre for Health Leadership and Research.

Suzanna Fitzpatrick, DNP, CRNP, is an acute care and family practice nurse practitioner at  University of Maryland Medical Center specializing in surgical patients where she has worked for the past 12 years.  She has a passion for mentoring novice nurse practitioners in their transition into practice.  She recently finished her doctorate in nursing practice with a focus on teamwork and collaboration in healthcare.  She has written articles on teamwork, nursing leaderships, and transition shock for novice practitioners.  Finally, she is an adjunct professor teaching Doctoral nursing students leadership at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She resides in Burtonsville, Maryland with her family.

Neil E. Grunberg, Ph.D., is Professor of Military & Emergency Medicine, Medical & Clinical Psychology, and Neuroscience, School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University (USU); Professor, USU Graduate School of Nursing; and Director of Research & Development, USU Leader and Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) program, Bethesda, Maryland. He earned baccalaureate degrees in Medical Microbiology and Psychology from Stanford University (1975); M.A. (1977), M.Phil. (1979), and Ph.D. (1980) degrees in Physiological and Social Psychology from Columbia University; and completed doctoral training in Pharmacology at Columbia University’s College of Physicians & Surgeons. He educates physicians, psychologists, and nurses for the Armed Forces and Public Health Service and has published >200 papers addressing behavioral medicine, drug use, stress, traumatic brain injury, and leadership. In 2015, Dr. Grunberg was selected to be a U.S. Presidential Leadership Scholar. He is a co-founder of the Healthcare Leadership Community of the International Leadership Association.

In light of challenges during the COVID pandemic, we encourage all submissions to address experiences, effects, and resilience relevant to healthcare leadership.

Whatever your submission type, be sure your proposal addresses one of the following themes:

  • Individual Growth: Experiences, Effects, and Resilience
  • Team Growth: Experiences, Effects, and Resilience
  • Leadership Education and Development
  • Organizational Leadership in Healthcare

INTERACTIVE WORKSHOPS (90 Minutes) & PANEL DISCUSSIONS (60 Minutes) 

Our planning committee is seeking workshop or panel session proposals. Half or more of the time should be dedicated to experiential learning and innovative, active audience participation focused on the development of new skills, techniques, or proficiencies.  Topic ideas should include a title, a detailed abstract (about 500 words), and presenter information (names of the presenters, their affiliations, and an explanation about how they will contribute to the session). The detailed abstract should include the learning outcomes, an explanation of the interactive components, and a brief overview of how the time will be used.

POSTERS

An interactive display poster is a visual display of a paper, a research project, a developing idea, or an innovative program that is set up and presented by the creator(s) during the hosted poster session. Posters are an excellent format for receiving feedback from colleagues with common interests. Posters are welcome from both emerging and established scholars, as well as from practitioners who are implementing innovative programs. Proposals for a poster must include a title, identified theme (see below), and abstract (500 words max).
